An article by the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam about the Vung Ang II project and its contributions to the community:
Energy Infrastructure Supporting Stable Power Supply, Regional Development, and Children’s Smiles in Vietnam: Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant
Electricity is an essential resource for Vietnam’s ongoing economic development. While Vietnam is actively adopting renewable energy to implement Power Development Plan VIII and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, everyone should understand the importance of base-load power. Base-load power supports the development of renewable energy, which is highly weather-dependent, and ensures a stable electricity supply to economic activities and citizens’ daily lives.
This time, Ambassador Ito Naoki visited Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant, one of the base-load power sources under construction in Ha Tinh Province. Vung Ang II project – one of the largest domestic power plants with a capacity of 1,200 MW – is aiming to start operations in 2025. VAPCO (a joint venture by Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation, Chugoku Electric, Shikoku Electric, and Korean companies) as the owner of the plant is progressing with the plant’s construction applying Ultra-Supercritical technology to minimize carbon emissions.
Moreover, VAPCO is committed to reusing the ash created by the plant. By collaborating with Viet Hai Company in Ha Tinh province, they aim to produce high-quality concrete from ash provided by the plant, and this concrete will be used in local infrastructure projects, creating a positive cycle for regional development.
Japanese enterprises are striving to realize Quality Infrastructure Investments in Vietnam. The most important aspect is the mind to integrate energy infrastructure development with regional development as a unified approach.
Vung Ang II project has established a longstanding cooperative relationship with the residents of Hai Phong Village as the neighborhood of the project. The project understands the needs of the community and has implemented various CSR activities, such as improving sanitation at kindergartens and primary schools, renovating the schoolyard, and supporting vocational training. During the visit to the village, we were deeply impressed by the smiles and cheerful voices of the many children at the local kindergarten.
Vung Ang II project plays a critical role as a stable power source supporting renewable energy adoption in Vietnam, at the same time, it forms a symbiotic framework interacting with the local community, making it a flagship project of cooperation between Japan and Vietnam. The Embassy of Japan will continue to promote similar efforts in the future.
